How much cleanser, serum and cream do you actually need?
A pump of serum is quickly at hand. With the next bottle, much more comes out with the same movement. And any amount can be taken from the cream jar anyway. No wonder that a brief recommendation like “use little” in the bathroom sometimes doesn’t help much.
You can base the appropriate amount on your specific packaging, the instructions and the area you want to care for. This is possible even if the package does not say grams or milliliters per application.
A pump stroke is a specification for this bottle
Pump strokes are not a product-wide unit of measurement. If a brand mentions them in their instructions, the recommendation applies to the product in question and its packaging. Therefore, do not automatically adopt the number when switching to another serum.
It is similar with pipettes: a certain number of drops from a thin serum does not describe every other recipe. And when you care for your face and neck, apply to a different area than just a small area on your cheeks.
These differences explain why you don’t have to derive a personal standard portion for all other products from one bottle. Looking at the instructions for use when you first open it will give you a better starting point. The routine for the morning and evening helps you keep the existing steps clear.
The cleanser should be able to be used without strong rubbing
With the SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil , the manufacturer mentions a few pumps on a dry face with dry hands. Then massage gently, add water to emulsify and rinse thoroughly. A fixed number per face is not specified in these instructions. SKIN1004: Application of the cleaning oil
Be guided by whether the product can be easily distributed over the area to be cleaned according to the instructions. If your hands only drag over the skin, rubbing more vigorously will not help with gentle cleaning. Then check the amount and application steps instead of simply massaging for longer.
The oil contains, among other things, Centella extract and vegetable oils; This also includes fragrant oils such as bergamot oil. If you avoid certain fragrance ingredients, a smaller portion will not solve this selection issue. Please see the full list of ingredients.
For a foaming cleaner, a very large mountain of foam is also not a measure of quantity. For dry skin, the AAD recommends using only as much cleansing product as is necessary to cleanse and avoiding thick layers of foam. AAD: Cleansing for dry skin
We explain in Double Cleansing what role cleansing oil and a second cleanser can have in your evening.
A serum with a specific manufacturer’s information
For the Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Serum Unscented , Purito specifies two to three pumps for the face and neck after cleansing and toning. This is an actual published guidance for this product. The ingredients include glycerin, centella extract and panthenol. Purito: Product information and application
The number helps you get to know the bottle. It does not oblige you to introduce a previously unused toner beforehand. If you use one, note how the two textures apply together. Our article about Toner and Essence will help you classify similar additional steps.
The question of quantity also belongs to the specific product purpose. When it comes to a peeling or retinoid, the instructions for use are particularly important; a casual recommendation on the amount of a moisturizing serum cannot be transferred to this.
Cream from the jar: distribute evenly and observe
For the Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream , the manufacturer’s instructions speak of a suitable amount that is distributed evenly over the face. A specific fruit size or number of grams is not specified there. Jojoba oil and shea butter are in both tested ingredient lists. Pyunkang Yul: Moisture Cream
First take a portion that you can distribute in a controlled manner. If individual areas still need care, this can be added there. This way you can see where the cream is going better than if you rub a large amount all over your face straight away.
Next time, also look at how the care feels later: Do your cheeks remain comfortable? Is the film on your forehead too rich for you? Such observations help with the quantity and with the question of whether the chosen cream texture suits you at all.
When the layers collect on the skin
Sometimes a routine seems very wet immediately after application, stays sticky for longer than desired or rolls off during subsequent makeup. This is a reason to go through the combination. From the unrolling alone you can neither tell which component is responsible nor that a product is fundamentally bad.
If possible, change one thing at a time: such as the amount of an optional serum or the number of similar moisturizing steps. Apply each product according to its instructions and allow it to absorb before applying the next layer. A fixed waiting time of several minutes for each shift cannot be derived from this.
If your skin burns, is noticeably red, or itches, try a new product that reacts noticeably and let any lingering symptoms resolve. Continuing to experiment with changing amounts of such a reaction makes classification more difficult. FDA: Unexpected reactions to cosmetics
For sun protection, the tested application amount counts
The sun protection factor stated on a sun cream is determined as two milligrams of product per square centimeter of skin . In order to achieve the specified protection, this amount is crucial. Too little product significantly reduces protection. This is explained by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection .
Here you should not reduce the amount to make your morning care less rich. If you encounter an unpleasant interaction, check the optional steps below first or choose a sunscreen with a more suitable texture.
You can find the orientation for different areas of the body and how to reapply in the sun protection guide . Testing according to a standardized order explains why sun protection is a separate quantity issue.
A small note for the next use
When you start a new bottle, three short pieces of information are enough: What do the instructions say? Which areas do I care for? How does the combination feel later? You can simply use the note function on your cell phone.
After a few uses, you will get an orientation for the products you actually use. When you switch to another packaging, you look again at its information. You don’t have to make more of it.
What we know for sure
- Pumps and drops refer to the specific product and its packaging.
- A manufacturer’s information like Purito’s is more helpful than invented universal portions.
- Feelings of care can help select optional amounts and layers; Significant irritations should be considered separately.
- When it comes to sun protection, the tested application amount is essential for the specified protection.
