Korean skincare routine morning and evening
K-Beauty Notes by Lee · Routines instead of rules
A Korean skincare routine can look like a very well-stocked shelf: cleansing oil, cleanser, toner, essence, serum, eye cream, lotion, cream, mask and sunscreen. Ten steps before the coffee gets cold.
But it can also consist of three products.
K-Beauty is not about applying as many layers as possible every morning and every evening. The idea behind it is more interesting: cleanse gently, build up moisture appropriately, respect the skin barrier and consistently protect against UV radiation during the day.
Protect in the morning, clean in the evening
Morning and evening routines have different tasks.
Rarely does much need to be removed in the morning. The routine prepares the skin for sun, weather, sweat and perhaps makeup. The most important conclusion is sun protection.
In the evening, sunscreen, makeup, dirt and excess sebum come off. The skin then receives moisture and – if really necessary – a targeted active ingredient.
So the routine doesn’t become Korean because of its length. But through attention to texture, skin condition and regular protection.
The simple morning routine
1. Cleanse gently – or just rinse
A mild cleanser is possible in the morning, but not necessary for every skin. Dry or sensitive skin often gets by with lukewarm water. Oily skin may find a gentle water-based cleanser more comfortable.
The important thing is the feeling afterwards: clean, but not squeaky or tense.
2. Moisturize as needed
A light lotion, gel or cream helps retain water in the skin. The skin condition decides which texture is right: dry more creamy, oily more light, combination skin in zones if necessary.
A toner or essence can supplement this step. Both are optional. Modern skin doesn’t need a toner to essentially “reset” its pH after every cleanse, and an essence doesn’t open a secret door through which all subsequent products penetrate deeper.
If a toner provides pleasant moisture, it can stay. If the cream alone is enough, nothing is missing.
3. Sun protection as the final care step
In the morning, the routine ends with broad-spectrum sun protection. Dermatological recommendations state at least SPF 30; many Korean facial products offer SPF 50+ and additional UVA labeling.
Sun protection comes after care and before make-up. If you spend a long time outdoors, sweat or rub, it must be replaced according to the product instructions.
No serum eliminates this step.
The simple evening routine
1. Remove sunscreen and make-up
A cleansing oil or balm can remove waterproof sunscreen and make-up. Afterwards, a mild water-based cleaner can remove any residue. This is Double Cleansing .
It is a possibility, not a daily law. If you don’t wear a lot of products and remove everything easily with a single mild cleaner, you don’t have to wash twice as a matter of principle. Too much cleaning can be drying and irritating.
2. Use at most one targeted active ingredient
After cleaning comes – if necessary – a product for a specific target. For example, salicylic acid for clogged pores, a retinoid for photoaging or a soothing barrier care for irritated skin.
Not everything at the same time. Active ingredients are introduced slowly and applied according to their respective instructions. For prescription products, the doctor’s plan applies, not the “thin before fat” rule.
3. Finish with moisturizer
A lotion or cream forms the calm finish. Dry Skin usually needs a richer texture. Oily skin can choose a light gel cream. Combination skin can also care for different areas differently.
A separate eye cream is optional. If the normal face cream is well tolerated on the eye area, it doesn’t automatically need its own jar.
What about toner, essence and serum?
The terms usually describe texture and product idea, but not strictly defined classes of active ingredients.
- Toners are often very liquid and provide moisture or contain mild active ingredients.
- Essences often lie between toner and serum.
- Serums are usually more concentrated on a specific skin target.
If you want to use several well-tolerated layers, you often start with the more liquid texture and end with cream. This order is called layering. It is a useful guide, but not a law of nature.
Each additional layer also increases the number of possible sources of irritation. That’s why every product has a task. “Because it’s part of the tenth step” isn’t one.
Masks, peels and special evenings
Sheet masks and sleeping masks can occasionally provide additional moisture. They do not replace a permanent basic routine and do not have to be used daily.
Peeling is also not a mandatory step. Mechanical grain peels can irritate sensitive or inflamed skin. Chemical peels with AHA or BHA are introduced slowly and according to the skin type. How often depends on the product, the concentration and the skin – never simply “as often as possible”.
A special evening can therefore consist of a mask. A very good evening can simply end with cream.
Four short routines as orientation
Dry Skin
Water, cream and sunscreen in the morning. Cleanse gently in the evening and use a richer barrier care product. A moisturizing toner is possible, but not mandatory.
Oily skin
Cleanse gently in the morning, use a light moisturizer and sunscreen. Clean thoroughly but gently in the evening. If the pores are clogged, a single active ingredient can be added later.
Combination skin
Use a light base all over the face. If necessary, dry cheeks receive more cream, the T-zone less. Active ingredients can be used zone by zone.
Sensitive skin
Keep the routine short and fragrance-free. Test new products individually. If you experience burning, persistent redness, swelling or a rash, take a break and seek professional advice.
Briefly summarized
In the morning, the skin needs the right protection. In the evening she needs gentle cleaning and care that suits her current condition.
A good Korean skincare routine does not consist of a fixed number of steps. Its basis is:
In the morning: clean, care for, protect.
In the evening: remove, provide targeted care, apply cream.
Toner, essence, serum, eye cream and masks are supplements. If you don’t need it, you haven’t forgotten a step.
Lee’s fact note
- Dermatological recommendations advise gentle cleansing and washing the face no more than about twice a day and after heavy sweating.
- Double cleansing can be useful for make-up or sun protection that is difficult to remove, but it is not mandatory for every skin type in the morning and evening.
- Toner is not a necessary step. Modern cleaners are often already formulated in such a way that no separate “pH balancing” is required.
- Too many products and several new active ingredients at the same time can irritate the skin and make it difficult to find the cause.
- Broad-spectrum sun protection with at least SPF 30 belongs at the end of your morning care routine. He does not protect alone; Shade and clothing remain important.
- Peels are adapted to skin type, product and tolerance. Redness and burning are not a sign of particular effectiveness.
