Toner and Essence: What’s the difference and do you need both?

Toner, essence and serum are often right next to each other. Your tasks may overlap. This way you can see what complements your existing care in a useful way.

Toner and Essence: What’s the difference and do you need both?

Toner and Essence: What’s the difference and do you need both?

One bottle says Toner, the next says Essence. And then there is also an Essence Toner. Anyone who pauses for a moment has read carefully: the names really don’t make it easy.

These products usually involve a light care step after cleaning. Whether one or two bottles make sense for this can be determined better by their contents and your existing care than by the order in the shop menu.

The names provide a direction

A toner is often very liquid and can be easily spread over the face. Many toners are offered as moisturizers. Others contain peeling acids and therefore have a different task. Both can be in a similar looking bottle.

A Essence , in German essence, is often described as light care with a specific focus. This can also be moisture. Some essences are watery, others feel a little more gelatinous.

A serum is usually offered for a specific care issue, such as additional moisture or a more even-looking skin complexion. However, from the word serum alone you cannot determine a specific amount of active ingredient or a stronger effect than an essence.

The manufacturer’s guide from COSRX shows how close the categories are: There, serums and essences are classified together as products for individual care concerns. What is particularly interesting for your everyday life is the feeling of care: a watery layer after washing or a concentrated serum step before the cream.

An Essence Toner makes the overlap tangible

The Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner already has both terms on the bottle. The manufacturer describes it as a moisturizer with a slightly richer, essence-like texture. You use it after cleaning.

This is a possible product if you want to try an additional light moisturizing step under your cream. You don’t need to first apply another toner and then add a second essence.

If you have little time in the morning, a thin cream before your usual cream can be pleasant. If you have a specific request, such as niacinamide, it depends on the active ingredient it contains – whether the bottle says toner, essence or serum is of secondary importance.

Do you need a toner and an essence?

If your skin is pleasantly cared for with the current cream and you don’t miss anything, you don’t need to add any of the two steps. The American Academy of Dermatology lists cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection as a simple foundation . This allows you to keep a complete routine manageable.

Maybe you just like this thin layer of care before applying cream. Then first choose a product for it. This makes it easier to determine whether the additional effort is worth it for you.

If you already have a moisturizing serum, check there first. A toner and an essence with the same care goal might feel very similar next to it. Before you buy more, you can put the existing products next to each other and give each one a task. If two bottles have the same answer, one of them can stay on the shelf for the time being.

If you want to keep your budget manageable, you can initially stick with your tried and tested cream. If you are particularly interested in hyaluronic acid on the labels, you can find a more precise classification of this ingredient in the article Hyaluronic acid for the skin.

How to find the space between cleanser and cream

With a moisturizing toner like the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, you can put some product into clean palms and gently rub it onto your face. A cotton pad is not absolutely necessary for this. Further care then follows the respective application instructions.

As an initial orientation, it is sufficient: clean, apply the selected moisturizing step, apply cream. If you supplement with a serum, follow its instructions. The overview of the Korean skin care routine helps you classify the possible steps; the contribution to the routine morning and evening takes the time of day into account.

Start with a manageable amount rather than several full palms. If the result remains unpleasantly sticky or if it becomes too much together with the cream, try less next time. This is a practical adjustment and not a reason to add another layer.

Two application questions that often arise

Do there really have to be seven layers with the 7-skin method? This refers to the repeated application of thin layers of toner. A fixed number of layers is unnecessary to get started; First try the moisturizing toner according to the instructions. You shouldn’t simply layer a toner with peeling acids in this pattern. Its own application instructions apply.

Does the toner have to be applied to the skin within three seconds? In the dermatological recommendations used here, there is no fixed time limit of seconds for this. Moisturizing on slightly damp skin is a practical option. It’s enough to have your products at hand; After the towel, no one has to frantically search for a bottle.

What we know for sure

  • Toner, essence and serum can overlap in their care tasks. The product name alone does not reveal the specific composition.
  • Simple basic care does not necessarily require an additional toner and essence.
  • A moisturizing toner and a toner with peeling acids cannot be used interchangeably.
  • Manufacturer information on the respective product takes precedence over general layer or second rules.
