Ceramides: Why they are in many care creams

Ceramides are part of the skin itself and are in many care creams. What matters is the finished formula and how your skin feels - not the number on the pack.

Ceramides: Why they are in many care creams

Ceramides: Why they are in many care creams

Some creams put a single ingredient large on the front. Ceramides are sometimes followed by a number: three, five or a whole complex. That sounds like something you could compare. The practical question remains: Which cream feels pleasant on your skin?

Ceramides have a good reason for showing up in skincare. They are also part of the skin itself. It’s worth taking a quick look at their surface before we turn over the next pan.

Skin fats with a specific task

The outermost layer of skin is called horny layer . Their flattened horny cells are surrounded by a mixture of lipids; Lipids is the technical term for fats and fat-like substances. This mixture includes ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. Their orderly arrangement helps limit water loss through the skin. DermNet explains the protective function of the skin and its lipid layers .

You can imagine this layer as a carefully laid structure. What counts for its function is how the components work together. A single raw material on a list of ingredients therefore does not reveal how well a finished cream does its job.

Even skin shine does not answer the question about a ceramide deficiency. You cannot detect such a defect in the mirror. Observations such as rough spots, the feeling after washing or the tolerance of your previous cream are more helpful for everyday care decisions. The skin type overview helps you sort through these impressions.

What a cream with ceramides can do

Ceramides are used in care to support the skin barrier. Research on this often considers complete formulations. In a small, randomized study of 50 adults, a cream containing ceramides and other moisturizing ingredients increased measured skin moisture. Several creams or a lotion and a foundation without the care ingredients examined were compared. The original paper by Spada and colleagues describes the recipes and measurements.

The study was carried out by researchers from the manufacturer of the test cream. It helps to understand the possibilities of a concrete formulation. It does not prove that its ceramides alone caused the effect or that another cream achieves the same results. The Anua product presented here has not been tested.

For your selection this means: Ceramides are a useful starting point if you are looking for a moisturizer. The right cream must still be compatible with your sun protection, the way your skin feels and your morning.

Ceramides or hyaluronic acid?

You don’t have to choose one in principle. Ceramides are lipids. Hyaluronic acid belongs to a different group of substances; Hyaluronates are used in cosmetics, among other things, for moisturizing or water-binding tasks. The safety report of the Cosmetic Ingredient Review on hyaluronates classifies these cosmetic functions.

Both can be in the same cream. Then you don’t have to divide the tasks between two bottles. An additional hyaluronic serum is only worth considering if you want to add anything at all. You can find out more about its use in our notes about hyaluronic acid in skincare.

The short form “Ceramides give fat, hyaluronic gives water” would be too crude. Care products contain multiple ingredients, and water retention and the skin barrier are related. In the bathroom, it’s the finished mixture that you apply that counts.

Read the list of ingredients using an example

For the Anua 3 Ceramide Panthenol Moisture Barrier Cream you will find the names Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP and Ceramide EOP in the currently listed INCI list. The letters indicate different forms of ceramide. They are not percentages or school grades for the cream.

There are also panthenol, glycerin and hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate. This is a tangible example of how multiple care ingredients come together in one product. Anua’s manufacturer website also lists the three ceramides.

The shop instructions classify the cream as the last care step in the evening. You can spread an appropriate amount gently. The fact that individual ceramides are far back is no reason to apply more cream: their exact amount cannot be determined from their position. Our article on the 1% rule in skincare explains how ingredient lists are structured.

This turns the ingredient into a helpful selection

Maybe you only want to use cleanser and cream in the evening. Then first check whether the existing cream is comfortable to wear. If so, the word ceramide does not have to be on your package.

If you want to change something, formulate it as specifically as possible: “I would like more care on my cheeks” is a good starting question. Another person is looking for a lighter texture because it bothers the creamy feeling at the hairline. Both concerns can be addressed without making the number of ceramides a competition.

A barrier cream itself can be intolerable. It doesn’t automatically belong on open skin; DermNet calls these limits for barrier creams . If burning, pain or inflamed areas persist, the cause should be clarified medically. The notes on the skin barrier explain why a product name does not provide a diagnosis for this.

The guide to ingredients in K-Beauty shows you how ceramides are classified alongside other care ingredients. You can also read it with the ingredients list of your previous cream. Maybe some of that is already in there.

What we know for sure

  • Ceramides are part of the lipid mixture of the stratum corneum.
  • Studies on ceramide creams examine ready-made formulations with multiple ingredients.
  • Ceramides and hyaluronic acid fulfill different tasks and can be included together in care.
  • The number of different ceramides alone is not a quality measure for a cream.
