PDRN, collagen and peptides: Three care terms in comparison
You are looking for a serum that makes your skin feel nourished and a little more supple. The packaging then says PDRN, collagen and five different peptides. Suddenly the decision sounds like biochemistry, even though you actually just want to know whether the product is right for you.
The names can be interesting without you having to make a big promise about them. They describe different substances. And the same question is worth asking for all of them: What do we know about this component in an applied care product – and what comes from a completely different context?
Collagen: differentiate skin component and cosmetic ingredient
Collagen is a structural protein in our body. Among other things, it contributes to the firmness of the skin. When you read the word on a cream container, it initially means an ingredient in the cream. Applied collagen does not simply rebuild the body’s own collagen framework.
Care containing collagen can form a film on the surface that helps limit moisture loss. The Cleveland Clinic describes this cosmetic benefit in its classification of collagen . A more pleasant feeling on the skin is already a sensible care goal; A cream does not have to replace lost skin structures.
In ingredient lists you will find, for example, Hydrolyzed Collagen . “Hydrolyzed” means that the protein has been broken down into smaller components. This name alone does not indicate a penetration depth or an effect on the body’s own collagen formation. Such statements require data for specific preparation.
Peptides: Small chains, many different names
Peptides are made up of amino acids linked together. “Peptides” is therefore a whole group of substances. For example, Copper Tripeptide-1 and Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 are different ingredients, although both are advertised under this heading. The Cleveland Clinic explains the structure and classification of peptides in skincare .
Studies of finished care products are available for individual peptides. A 12-week study of 93 women compared a moisturizer containing a specific palmitoyl pentapeptide against the corresponding foundation. The peptide-containing variant showed advantages in the wrinkles examined. The study by Robinson and colleagues comes from research by a cosmetics manufacturer.
This is more concrete than a general “peptides work”. At the same time, it does not answer what another peptide does in a different concentration and formulation. Five peptides on one package therefore do not result in five proven effects. The complete formulation, texture and tolerability remain crucial for your selection.
PDRN: This is where the application is particularly important
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide and refers to DNA fragments. In this context, you will encounter, among other things, Sodium DNA on cosmetic ingredient lists. However, the INCI name does not reveal the exact size distribution of these fragments or how they behave in the finished serum.
PDRN and related polynucleotides are also discussed in connection with injections. Materials enter the tissue in a different way than when applying a cream. Promises about wound healing or “DNA repair” derived from this are not evidence of a cosmetic product.
For example, one experimental work examined how changing size and charge influences the uptake of a particular PDRN material. This question alone shows how important the preparation is. The laboratory study on the targeted modification of PDRN does not provide any proof of effectiveness for the serum in your bathroom.
There are now also studies on application: A recent study tested a certain PDRN eye cream in a short comparison on humans in addition to laboratory and skin models. The study on a defined PDRN preparation cannot also be transferred to every product with sodium DNA. For advice, this means interesting research, but no reason to attribute the same properties to every PDRN cream.
A serum in which all three terms come together
The Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum 30 ml brings together several of the substances discussed here: sodium DNA, hydrolyzed collagen and several peptides. There are also glycerin and niacinamide, among other things. This is how you get to know PDRN, collagen and peptides in a single serum step.
Two additional pieces of information are helpful for the selection: The list contains Fragrance , i.e. fragrance, as well as Milt Extract and Salmon Egg Extract , components of fish. This variant is therefore not a vegan choice. Medicube now also offers another Rose PDRN variant; the manufacturer’s website differentiates between the two recipes . Pay attention to the exact variant and the ingredients on your package.
If you consciously avoid fragrances, this information is more practical than the number of peptides. And if you like the recipe, the serum can be classified after cleansing and before the cream according to the product instructions. You don’t automatically need an additional collagen serum or another peptide product.
You can find collagen-containing toners, serums, creams and masks under Collagen Care .
This is how I would simplify the decision
First, think about what you miss about your previous care. If your skin feels uncomfortably dry, it’s worth looking at the moisturizer as a whole. Our article on ceramides in skincare complements this perspective. If you’re weighing up between different approaches to skin aging signs, the article Retinol and Retinal explains another group of substances with their own application limits.
You don’t have to try these options at the same time. A product that suits your needs and fits well into your everyday life is easier to evaluate than several new serums at once. The overview ingredients in K-Beauty explains other care ingredients and the wishes they suit.
What we know for sure
- Collagen in a cream is not a direct replacement for the skin’s collagen framework.
- Statements about peptides must match the peptide being examined and the respective formulation.
- Injections, laboratory experiments and applied PDRN cosmetics are different applications.
- When it comes to Medicube serum, the specific variant, fragrance and animal ingredients also count when choosing.
