Glycerin for the skin: why is it in so many creams?

Maybe glycerin has been on your favorite cream for a long time without you paying much attention to it. It is a humectant: the ingredient binds water and thus helps to retain moisture in the skin and product. COSMILE Europe also describes its skin-care function . Chemically, glycerin is a sugar alcohol; The term alcohol here means something other than the highly volatile ethanol.

Like hyaluronic acid, glycerin can be part of a moisturizing formula. Which of the two substances is “better” says little about how the finished cream feels on your skin. In the Beauty of Joseon Dynasty Cream , for example, glycerin is found alongside nourishing oil ingredients such as squalane. You get both together in one cream and you don’t have to add any individual raw materials.

Apply an amount that can be spread comfortably and monitor how your skin feels after it has absorbed. Do you like a richer texture or prefer something light? Our post on choosing a moisturizer will help you make this decision. Glycerin is a useful ingredient, but no reason to swap one well-suited cream for the next.

Statutory guarantee

Official EU notice on the statutory guarantee. The full text follows below the graphic. Link to Your Europe, opens in a new tab.

Text of the EU notice

At least two years of statutory guarantee of conformity for goods sold in the European Union.

Consumers can assert their rights under the statutory guarantee, for example if the goods

  • do not correspond to the description,
  • do not function as intended.

Sellers are liable for any lack of conformity that existed at the time of delivery of the goods and becomes apparent within the statutory guarantee period. In such cases sellers must offer:

  • free repair or free replacement,
  • in certain cases a price reduction or a full refund of the purchase price.

Some countries apply a longer statutory guarantee period. For second-hand goods a shorter period may apply, but not less than one year.

For more information about your rights in a particular country, scan the QR code below or ask the seller.

What to do if you receive goods that do not conform?

  1. Report the problem to the seller as soon as possible.
  2. Provide proof of purchase, such as the receipt, invoice or a bank statement.

Sellers and manufacturers may also offer commercial guarantees that apply independently of the statutory guarantee. This GARAN label, for example, shows that the manufacturer grants a commercial durability guarantee at no extra cost that covers the whole product.
