Excursion tip Korea – Hallasan, Busan and Seoul

Some excursions fit into an afternoon. This one needs a map.

Hallasan stands in the middle of Jeju. Busan faces the sea to the southeast. Seoul lies far to the northwest and moves to its own beat. If you want to see all three places, don’t plan a day tour, but rather three very different chapters of a Korea trip.

One thing starts with hiking boots. One with lots of stairs. And one probably at a subway station.

Hallasan: the mountain with the white deer

At around 1,950 meters, Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea. The dormant volcano rises from the center of Jeju Island. At its summit lies Baengnokdam , a crater in which water collects after rainfall.

The Korean name 백록담 means “Pond of the White Deer”. According to a legend, divine beings came to the mountain and rode white deer. Another story tells of a white deer drinking at the crater lake. The mountain not only carries hiking trails, but also stories.

The practical part

The long routes Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa lead to the summit and the Baengnokdam. For the summit sections that require reservations, a place must be booked in advance via the official Hallasan system.

If you don’t want to go all the way to the crater, you can choose a shorter route like Yeongsil or Eorimok. This does not lead to the summit, but shows rocks, forests and the vast volcanic landscape. Which trails are open depends on the weather, time of year and maintenance work.

The following applies to Hallasan:

  • start early and check the seasonal entry times
  • take sturdy shoes, water, provisions and an additional layer
  • plan for UV protection even in cloudy conditions
  • check the current path status the day before and in the morning
  • plan an alternative day for the trip

On a mountain, good planning is usually more valuable than a particularly ambitious photo.

Busan: colorful houses over the sea

Gamcheon Culture Village looks from afar as if someone spilled a box of crayons over a hillside. Narrow streets and stairs run between the staggered houses. Today there are small shops, workshops, art and viewing points there.

But the colors only tell the second half of the story.

Gamcheon emerged in the 1950s as a settlement for people who fled to Busan during the Korean War. In 2009, a collaborative art project began with residents and artists. Today’s cultural district developed from this.

The practical part

Gamcheon is not an open-air museum. People live in many houses.

The official tourism information therefore asks for peace, cleanliness and not to use drones. The most beautiful paths are often the narrowest entrances to private apartments. A photo is taken quickly. Consideration lasts longer.

For a relaxed visit:

  • start in the morning if possible
  • take a map with you at the information center
  • wear comfortable shoes for steps and inclines
  • respect private doors, windows and roof areas
  • Time for a slow walk instead of just leaving it for photo points

If you still have energy afterwards, you can continue the day down by the water. It is precisely this change between the steep residential area and the harbor landscape that makes Busan so unique.

Seoul: between Hanok roofs and city light

Seoul does not show its opposites one after the other. They often stand on the same street corner.

In Bukchon, alleys run between Hanok , traditional Korean houses. A few subway stations away there are glass facades, department stores and entire floors full of cafés. In the evening, bridges, traffic arteries and high-rise buildings light up, while a quiet path begins again on a mountain slope.

Bukchon is a residential area

Bukchon is also inhabited. For the particularly visited areas, the city of Seoul currently states visiting times from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday . Residential streets should not be visited by tourists on Sundays and outside of these times. Before you travel, it’s worth taking another look at the official information, as rules and zones can be adjusted.

Start at the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center or an official visitor information center. From there, it’s easier to understand the route – and you’re less likely to run into a tour group in front of a private bedroom window.

After that, Seoul can get louder. A market, a shopping street or an evening walk with a view of the illuminated city shows the other side. Both belong together. Old Seoul is not a frozen setting, and modern Seoul has not shed its history.

This is how the trip can be combined

For Hallasan, Busan and Seoul I would plan at least three separate trip components:

  1. Seoul: two to three days for Bukchon, downtown and an evening view of the city.
  2. Busan: two days for Gamcheon, port area and sea.
  3. Jeju: two to three days with a full day of hiking and a weather buffer for Hallasan.

Between Seoul and Busan, the train is usually the quietest connection. Jeju is usually reached by flight or ferry. Specific connections, baggage rules and timetables are only checked for the actual travel period.

If you only have a few days, it is better to choose two places. Korea doesn’t always reward speed. Sometimes the more interesting route lies three flights of stairs further, behind an inconspicuous gate or in a break that wasn’t even included in the itinerary.

Briefly summarized

  • Hallasan is the big nature day: reserve, start early and leave a buffer for the weather.
  • Gamcheon in Busan combines views and art with the history of a settlement that is still inhabited today.
  • Bukchon in Seoul shows Hanok culture in the middle of the big city, but requires special consideration for the neighborhood.
  • All three destinations do not belong in a day trip, but in a journey with its own stages.

Travel highlights

  • Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes”.
  • Only Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa lead to the summit crater. A reservation system applies to the relevant summit sections.
  • Baengnokdam (백록담) means “Pond of the White Deer”. The connection to white deer comes from traditional legends.
  • Gamcheon Culture Village is based on a refugee settlement from the Korean War era. The artistic renewal began in 2009.
  • Bukchon and Gamcheon are inhabited districts. Visiting times, peace and quiet and the protection of private areas are therefore part of the trip.
  • Opening times, route closures and reservation rules may change and must be checked again immediately before the trip.
