Store care correctly: bathroom, refrigerator and shelf life
The crucible says “12M”. You remember the purchase well, but not when you first opened it. There’s a serum waiting next to it that someone mentioned the fridge. Such small questions usually only arise when the products have been in the bathroom for a while.
A fixed storage location and a short note when opening make care clearer. You don’t need your own cosmetics refrigerator or an elaborate system. The most important information comes from the packaging and instructions for your specific products.
A good place is dry and protected from heat
The windowsill looks nice with a few bottles. If the sun hits there directly, it is unfavorable for care. Heat, light, air and temperature fluctuations can change the smell, color or consistency of cosmetics; Moisture can promote the growth of microorganisms. This is explained by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FDA: Factors of cosmetic durability
Therefore, look for a place that fits the storage instructions and is neither directly on the radiator nor in a hot car. A closed cupboard can be practical as long as it doesn’t get warm and humid. In the bathroom, the area where shower water constantly reaches is not a good place for open pots.
If your bathroom stays wet for a long time after each shower, a shelf in a drier room may be more comfortable. You can take the few products you need with you to use and then put them back again. Unopened supplies can be stored separately.
Does a serum belong in the fridge?
This is best written in its own instructions. For COSRX The Vitamin C 13 Serum the information is specific: COSRX mentions refrigerator storage at 3 to 10 °C and upright storage after opening. In order to preserve the active ingredients contained, the manufacturer recommends consumption within two months of opening. COSRX: current product information
This consumption recommendation is an additional product-specific note. Also pay attention to the labeling of your pack. The balanced formula contains 13 percent ascorbic acid; This does not result in a refrigerator rule for every serum that says vitamin C.
For the Purito Wonder Releaf Centella Serum Unscented , however, the manufacturer’s information requires a cool, dry storage location. Refrigerator instructions are not mentioned there. Purito: Storage
A pleasantly cool feeling on the skin is a personal preference. It does not automatically extend the stated life of a product. If you are interested in vitamin C care, you can find the differences between the forms and applications in our vitamin C article .
It’s worth paying attention for a minute when opening it for the first time
Take photos of the back and bottom of the package before small stickers become illegible or you put the outer box away. It may contain information that you will need for a later query: product variant, batch identification, shelf life and storage instructions.
The best-before date describes the shelf life when stored correctly. The information about the open jar symbol refers to use after first opening; For example, 12M means twelve months. The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety explains how this information differs.
Write the actual opening date on a small label or in your notes. The purchase date may be earlier and is therefore not always the appropriate starting point. Our guide to buying original K-Beauty explains the labeling in more detail.
Clean removal also works without special equipment
Wash your hands before use. Remove the care product with clean hands or a clean, dry spatula and then close the packaging again. A spatula also needs to be kept clean; its mere presence in the crucible is no guarantee of hygiene.
With a pipette, you can avoid contact with your face and fingers by placing the portion in your hand from a distance. Place open packaging so that nothing drips into it. The FDA recommends clean hands and containers and well-sealed packaging between uses. FDA: Use cosmetics safely
If a cream has become thick, don’t just add water or toner to make it smoother again. The original recipe and its shelf life specifications were established for the finished product. Adding a new cream to the last portion in the jar also makes assigning the opening date unnecessarily difficult.
When traveling, suitable smaller original sizes are a practical option where the labeling is retained. When refilling, keep an eye on the product information and the original opening date. A new travel container does not restart the shelf life from scratch.
What to do if the color, smell or texture is different?
A significant unexpected change is a reason to pause the application and inquire. The BVL cites separate components, an unpleasant smell or a changed appearance as possible indications that cosmetics have become unusable. Conversely, an inconspicuous impression alone is not a complete test of your condition.
Comparing with your own product helps more than with a general color table. The manufacturer describes the COSRX serum mentioned as slightly yellowish even in its normal state. Yellow for this product does not in itself mean that you have to throw it away. You should still clarify a new significant change.
If possible, photograph them in similar light and note how long you’ve noticed something. The retailer or manufacturer can respond more specifically with the product name, batch, opening date and previous storage. If there are visibly foreign components or mold, do not continue to use the care product.
A little note for your bathroom
You can copy these lines for every newly opened product:
| Information | Your note |
|---|---|
| Product and exact variant | Full name of the package |
| Opened for the first time | Date |
| Shelf life after opening | Information from Crucible symbol, if available |
| Additional date or manufacturer’s note | Keep wording or photo |
| Storage location | Suitable for instructions |
| Noticeable change | What has been different since when? |
If several similar creams are open at the same time, think about which ones you use regularly. When choosing a suitable moisturizer, it can help to first classify the feeling of care you have. An unopened supply is easier to keep track of than many half-used jars.
What we know for sure
- Storage conditions and clean removal influence the shelf life of cosmetics.
- Refrigerator instructions apply to specific products; they are expressly stated in the COSRX Vitamin C 13.
- The opening date helps to track the duration of use after opening.
- Changes should be examined on a product-by-product basis; Transferring does not reset the deadline.
