At what age should you start skincare?

For skincare, there is no birthday where a serum suddenly has to be on the cake.

The short answer is: You start early with skin protection. Your own routine only becomes necessary when everyday life and skin condition need it.

Skin care does not start with anti-aging

For children, adults take care of gentle washing, moisturizing dry skin and protection from the sun. This is already skincare – just without the bathroom shelf.

Around puberty, hormones often change sebum production. Then shine, blackheads or pimples may appear. A good place to start is with a mild cleanser, light moisturizer and UV protection. Three matching steps are worth more than ten lovely ones.

When active ingredients become useful

Active ingredients should match an actual skin problem, not an age on social media.

Children and young teens typically do not need an anti-aging routine that includes retinol, strong acids, or multiple serums. Such products can irritate without solving an existing problem.

Acne is something different. It can make targeted treatment useful – sometimes with active ingredients that are used dermatologically. In the case of inflammatory, painful or scarring acne, the selection should not be left to the algorithm, but to a dermatological specialist.

So age is just an indication. More important are skin condition, UV exposure and a specific goal.

What we know for sure

  • There is no universal minimum age for a basic skin care routine.
  • Gentle cleansing, moisture when necessary and sun protection are the basis – even before anti-aging is even an issue.
  • With puberty, more sebum can be produced. Then the routine can be adjusted without immediately becoming complicated.
  • Retinol, strong peels and anti-aging ingredients are not a precautionary part of every child or teenager’s routine.
  • Medical active ingredients for acne are a treatment. Selection and application may have different rules than freely chosen beauty products.

Statutory guarantee

Official EU notice on the statutory guarantee. The full text follows below the graphic. Link to Your Europe, opens in a new tab.

Text of the EU notice

At least two years of statutory guarantee of conformity for goods sold in the European Union.

Consumers can assert their rights under the statutory guarantee, for example if the goods

  • do not correspond to the description,
  • do not function as intended.

Sellers are liable for any lack of conformity that existed at the time of delivery of the goods and becomes apparent within the statutory guarantee period. In such cases sellers must offer:

  • free repair or free replacement,
  • in certain cases a price reduction or a full refund of the purchase price.

Some countries apply a longer statutory guarantee period. For second-hand goods a shorter period may apply, but not less than one year.

For more information about your rights in a particular country, scan the QR code below or ask the seller.

What to do if you receive goods that do not conform?

  1. Report the problem to the seller as soon as possible.
  2. Provide proof of purchase, such as the receipt, invoice or a bank statement.

Sellers and manufacturers may also offer commercial guarantees that apply independently of the statutory guarantee. This GARAN label, for example, shows that the manufacturer grants a commercial durability guarantee at no extra cost that covers the whole product.
