Einer der wichtigsten Faktoren der Skinalterung und der Entwicklung von Hyperpigmentierung und Melasma ist (übermäßige) Sonneneinstrahlung. Es werden drei Arten von UV-Strahlen unterschieden: UVA (UVA1 hat eine Reichweite von 340-400 Nanometer und UVA2 hat eine Reichweite von 320 und 340 Nanometer), UVB (320-280 nm) und UVC (280-100 nm).
