Propolis in skin care: What is behind the bee resin?
A golden yellow drop, a bee on the packaging, maybe the word “honey”: when it comes to propolis care, the idea of honey comes to mind. But the bottle can contain very different ingredients. It’s worth taking a look at the back, especially if you want to avoid bee products or your skin reacts quickly to new care.
You often come across propolis in serums and toners. Whether you like one of these also depends on how it is distributed, what it contains besides the bee resin and what space it should have between the cleanser and the cream.
What the bees do with the resin
Honey bees collect sticky resins on plants and trees and carry them back to the hive. There they use the material, among other things, to seal gaps and smooth rough surfaces. That’s why propolis is also called putty resin or bee resin. The Bee Lab at the University of Minnesota is studying this function in the bee colony. More about the origin of propolis .
The plant origin does not make it a purely plant-based cosmetic ingredient: Propolis is obtained from the beehive. It is therefore not a suitable choice for vegan care. Even a reference to the absence of animal testing would not change this; it answers a different question than that about the origin of an ingredient.
The composition of the resin may vary depending on the plants collected and their origin. “Propolis” does not refer to a single substance that is identical everywhere. This is one reason why research on a specific extract does not easily translate to every golden serum.
Keeping propolis, honey and beeswax apart
The three come from the same environment, but have different tasks there. Honey serves as a food source for bees. Wax is produced by bees and used to build honeycombs. Propolis contains the collected plant resins and is used, among other things, for sealing.
The names on cosmetic packaging help: Propolis Extract stands for propolis extract, Honey Extract for honey extract, Cera Alba for beeswax. A product can contain several of them. The honey color or a sweet product name do not give this away reliably.
Anyone who likes to eat honey does not yet know how their skin will react to a propolis product. Food compatibility and the compatibility of a finished cosmetic formulation are different observations.
Why is propolis in a serum?
Cosmetic brands use propolis extract in products that promise a supple, nourished skin feeling and a fresh shine. However, how the finished product feels depends on the entire recipe: water, humectants, thickeners and other ingredients work together.
In the two examples here, in addition to propolis, glycerin is also on the list of ingredients. The serum contains niacinamide and the toner contains honey extract. These are different combinations. If you primarily want more moisture under your cream, this classification is more helpful than asking about the “strongest” propolis product.
No acne treatment for humans follows from its function in the hive. Statements about the antibacterial effects of individual extracts are not sufficient. Our overview of ingredients in K-Beauty helps you to separate a cosmetic care concern from big promises of effectiveness.
Two products, two places in the routine
The Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide combines propolis extract with niacinamide in a slightly richer serum texture. Betaine Salicylate is also in the recipe. It is therefore worth considering the entire list when making your selection if you already use several active ingredient products.
Gently spread two to three drops of the serum onto the skin and pat it in. Manufacturer information on the Glow Serum .
The COSRX Full Fit Propolis Synergy Toner , on the other hand, is a liquid care step directly after cleansing. His consistent shop and manufacturer lists mention propolis extract, honey extract, glycerin, betaine and panthenol. You distribute it with your hands and then add your usual care. What is involved in the compatibility assessment?
Propolis can trigger contact allergies. This is documented in dermatological studies, for example in a study of people who were tested for dermatitis. Their results cannot be read as an allergy rate for all users. But they show why a natural origin is no guarantee of compatibility. Original study on the patch test with propolis .
If you have a known propolis allergy, you should avoid the product and not try it again at home. If you already have contact allergies and cannot classify the ingredients with certainty, a dermatological clarification before purchase will help.
For new cosmetics without a known allergy, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends first applying a small area of skin: twice daily for seven to ten days, in the intended amount. This can provide indications of a reaction, but does not replace a medical allergy test and does not rule out later reactions. This is how the AAD describes trying out new care .
If itching, redness, or swelling occurs, wash off the product and stop using it. If the symptoms are severe or persistent, the clarification should be in the hands of a professional. Burning is not a sign that a serum is working particularly effectively.
The first evening with a new product
Start with one of the two care steps and leave the rest of the process familiar for now. This way you can better observe whether the texture remains pleasant, the cream sits well on top and your skin feels good the next morning.
You may like a toner if you like to apply something liquid after washing. A serum can be distributed more specifically in small quantities. If both are available, this practical preference is a reasonable starting point. The propolis content alone does not decide the question.
What we know for sure
- Propolis, honey and beeswax are different bee products.
- Propolis is not suitable for vegan care.
- A pleasant care feeling comes from the entire formula, not from a single percentage.
- Contact allergies to propolis have been documented; A test at home does not replace an allergological examination.
